Artist’s French Home for Sale
May 16th, 2010Artist’s French Home For Sale
Situated in Varzay in Charente Maritime, our house was built in 1979. It is a solid little house in Charentais style, white with orange roof and shutters, a solid wood roof structure and thermal insulation bricks. It is situated on a sizeable piece of land with a large front garden. Laurel and Leylandii trees border the two sides, making it fully enclosed, and there is a wooded area at the back. We have had laid two large terraces, the first the full length of the back of the house with a step down to the second which surrounds the 10×5m pool. Both are tiled in provençal pink. The garden is not developed yet, but a local landscape gardener keeps the grass and hedges tidy in our absence.
Since we took over the property 15 years ago we have redesigned the interior. The living/dining/kitchen area is now open plan. The dining room doors open onto the terrace where outdoor living is possible for a very long season. Winters are mild so winter barbecues are not unknown. The kitchen has been completely redesigned with beech and black high quality furniture and appliances, including fridge freezer, built-in microwave, dishwasher, electric oven, cooker hood, and gas hob (bottled gas incredibly cheap to run.)
Varzay is a pretty village with Romanesque church, village hall and primary school. La Martiniere de Varzay, where our house is situated, is a hamlet three minutes’ drive from the centre of the village, with some very old houses and some new development. Baker, doctor, general store and pharmacy are a five-minute drive away in Pisany; hypermarket eight minutes’ drive away; ten minutes to town centre of Saintes and the main motorway north - south.
Ryanair flies (cheaply!!) from Stansted to La Rochelle airport, a 45-minute drive on the Autoroute de Oiseaux – one of the quietest motorways you will find in France will bring you to the house. Alternatively many major airlines take in Bordeaux Merignac which is a one and a half hour drive away from our house.
